sweet french toast!

Last week, I took advantage of the holiday by making a special breakfast for me and RH: crème brulée french toast with sweetened whipped cream and blueberries. I had made the french toast once before, years ago, and I remembered it being amazing and delicious. And it was delicious this time, but—sadly—it wasn’t nearly as amazing. I think it’s hard to scale the recipe down and still manage to get the crackly crème brulée crust that really makes it exciting. It was tasty, though, and it was sweet!

That weekend was also the first time I’d ever whipped cream at home. It was kind of fun, and now I can’t imagine ever using the stuff that comes in a can again! I chilled the mixer bowl and whisk in the freezer before whipping the heavy cream with some confectioner’s sugar, and it whipped up nice and fluffy and yummy in no time.

I’ve really enjoyed trying new recipes lately when I have the time (and that’s the hard part). I’ve got a few things on my list to try making soon, like the french macarons I fell in love with in Paris.

I took this photo of Ladurée macarons on one of our last days in Paris. Aren’t they beautiful??

June 3, 2009 - 11:00 am katie - So many questions Sabrina! Sign me up for the recipe....looks amazing. Also - question about how you post your photos. Do you blog from Flickr? Or just insert into your post straight from wordpress? k.

June 3, 2009 - 8:39 pm me - I've e-mailed you the recipe. As for my photos, I usually blog from flickr, but sometimes I upload images to my Web server and then reference them in the HTML of my post. Nine out of ten times, though, I'm inserting the flickr code or clicking "blog this" on the flickr site. I very, very rarely upload images for my posts via Wordpress.

June 10, 2009 - 7:53 am kim - that looks delicious! i'd love the recipe if you want to share. :) (i hope it's easy!) i've made whipped cream at home once, using a recipe that a barista at starbucks gave me for their in-house whipped cream. it was tasty, but didn't look as pretty.

July 14, 2009 - 10:39 pm me - Here's the recipe for the crème brulée french toast. For the whipped cream, I put the bowl of my Kitchenaid mixer and the wire whisk in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes to get them good and cold. Then I used heavy whipping cream, a few tablespoons of powdered sugar, and a high setting on my mixer to make a frothy whipped cream. Once that was done, I transferred the whipped cream to a mechanical pastry bag before piping it onto the plates. It was so delicious!
