RH and I stayed up until 1:30 a.m. Tuesday night watching the election results and the following speeches. I watched everything kind of in awe, and then it hit me.
Barack Obama won the presidency. It wasn’t even close.
I wish my dad were here to see it.
I was reminded of a time my freshman year in high school when I heard from a friend that her mother — one of the school’s German teachers — had referred to me as a “half-breed” when learning that I had placed second (and beat her daughter) in a national French competition.
And now, someone like me — someone who has lived with the ambiguity of a mixed race heritage and, probably also like me, has felt blessed by it — someone like me has become President of the United States of America.
That’s pretty freakin’ cool.
This is my favorite photo ever. I was about 10 days old, and my mom and dad look so young and lovely.
This is a photo of an American family. My dad served in the U.S. Army for 27 years, and we were the quintessential military family, packing up and moving every two or three years and climbing on tanks for “family days.”
And now we have another image of an American family, the family that will move into the White House, and that image will be broadcast to the world as a picture of America.
Besides thinking that the best candidate won, I must say that I — like so many others — am incredibly excited about what this means for our country.
One of my friends and coworkers told me today it’s like we have a clean slate with the world. Based on the celebratory images I’ve seen from around the world, I think she may be right.
On a totally different topic, we’ve signed a contract for our wedding venue…yay! Let the fun begin.
