a really fabulous birthday

Yesterday was my birthday.

It was fabulous. Really fabulous.

As I’ve grown older, my birthdays have become more and more low-key and subdued. I used to really look forward to my birthday, and I would plan some really cool event like a massive dinner around a big tree trunk table, a trip to a cornfield maze (the “maize”…get it?), or a recess playdate—complete with kickball, freeze tag, and red rover.

Now, though, it’s hard for me to get motivated to plan anything for my birthday, and I’m okay with that.

Yesterday was perfect. I went to brunch at Babette’s—one of my most fave brunch spots in the city—with RH, LS and Mom. We ate yummy food and took some photos to commemorate the occasion. We asked our waiter to snap a pic, and when we got the camera back, this is what we saw:

Yes, that’s a waiter in our photo! He snuck into our shot and we had no idea. Once we saw him standing there in the camera’s display, we cracked up laughing.

Another try got us a good shot:

After brunch, we headed back home for birthday cake! RH had ordered a fresh strawberry cake from Gabriel’s Desserts. The cake was SO GOOD. We are still joyfully eating the leftovers.

The afternoon was filled with wedding venue visits, and we added two possibilities to the list. I’m really hoping we can nail down a venue soon, since everything else will follow. I feel like once we figure out where we’re having the wedding and reception, then we can start planning the fun stuff!

After a really, really nice afternoon walk through Cabbagetown, we went to dinner at Ecco, which is our favorite restaurant in Atlanta. We had the good fortune of being waited on by our favorite server there. Her name is Autumn, and she’s awesome. We had a fantastic meal, as we always do there, complete with the goat cheese balls covered in honey and black pepper appetizer. We love that dish so much we discussed going back and sitting at the bar just to order it.

All in all, it was a really fantastic birthday. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I guess maybe I’m getting old.

Oh wait…I am getting old…that’s the whole point of a birthday! :P

November 26, 2008 - 12:58 pm me - Thanks, Castle! I definitely think that spending my birthday with people I care about has become more important than planning a spectacular event. Like you said, I just don't have time to do that anymore! My priorities have simply changed, and I'm okay with that. :)

November 26, 2008 - 11:50 am Castle - I have to admit: Birthdays do become more subdued after you hit the 30th milestone. The nine quiet years that happen after that is where I'm in the midst of. We are all busy working on enhancing each of our careers and being a more viable position of putting away funds rather than living check-by-check. The motivation factor in putting such things together are too wrapped up on other aspects of one's life including family and earning a living that I can say that in my own life I simply don't have the time to proportion enough towards something like a birthday. That being said, I think that the photo is priceless because now you're going to have a memory of your day including all the little things like your wait staff! The important part of your day that I can relate to more than anything is that you spent your special day with the ones you love the most. To me, that's all I can honestly ask for in this point in my life: I'm glad you had that...and the cheese ball appetizer. It sounds really yummy!

October 30, 2008 - 9:14 am Lydia - Ahh yes, I remember the big dinners, corn maze, and recess birthday parties! I guess this one WAS pretty laidback and low-key compared to the earlier celebrations. :) I look like a freak in these pictures. I mean, my hair does. You can tell I had been cutting my own bangs for a month. I got my hair cut this week so now it's right at my shoulders. What a relief!
