god grew tired of us

I totally forgot to include this in the mini-update I posted a moment ago. Last night I saw a fantastic, moving documentary called God Grew Tired of Us. I truly believe everyone should see this film. It’s enlightening and very grounding. I feel so fortunate and grateful for the life I am living, but I also recognize that I could be living a more fulfilling, more meaningful life. If you’ve seen the film, I’d love to know what you thought of it. If you haven’t, please make sure to add it to your list.

And while I’m on the subject of living a more meaningful life, I wanted to share a little progress. It’s very small, but to me, it means a lot. A while ago, I wrote about my sympathy for the homeless and desire to do something more to help than hand over some spare change. Well, I have been meaning to put together little care packages to keep with me in my car…just little brown lunchbags with things like beanie weanies, bottled water, a toothbrush and toothpaste, cookies, etc. to give to people panhandling on the off-ramps I frequent. I still haven’t done that yet, but the other day I was meeting AR at a coffeeshop and a homeless guy was sitting outside asking for change. I asked him if he wanted something to eat instead. He said yes, something sweet, so I went inside and bought him a muffin to go. I took the muffin and a cup of ice water outside to him and told him to have a good day. The muffin probably cost me more than it would have to just give him my spare change, but I dunno…I guess I kinda hoped it would go a little further than that in terms of recognizing the man as a person, and taking a few more minutes out of my day to try to help him out? Who knows if he would have rather had the money….

Ok, now I’m really going back to work!

January 31, 2007 - 11:10 pm Ally - Thanks for sharing that. Like you, I've meant to get something together for the homeless and hate just walking by. I don't feel like money is the answer, but if I kept granola bars or something in my purse, I could at least offer them that.

January 25, 2007 - 12:23 am me - Thanks for the comments, everyone! I think John Dau is an amazing man. I will try to support his organization, and I hope that many of you will choose to do so as well. Leo, thanks for the tip on the shoebox drive...do you have a URL for more info? Red, you should add the film to your Netflix queue. It sucks that there aren't any more Atlanta showings! And H...thanks for your comment...I want to be more conscious and aware of my life and everything that is in it, so hopefully this is a good first step.... :)

January 25, 2007 - 12:18 am H. (aka NC_State_gal) - That was really a nice thing that you did for that homeless person :).

January 23, 2007 - 1:06 pm curlyred - There are not more Atlanta screenings. Bummer.

January 22, 2007 - 10:16 pm Leo the 3rd - Related to this I know that the BWNA is collecting shoeboxes - fill the shoebox with items such as toothpaste, soap and other related toiletries and they will be donated to homeless women.

January 22, 2007 - 5:58 am Ken - Thank you for your great post about the film God Grew Tired of Us. I am working with John Dau, one of the Lost Boys in the film, in helping to raise support to help the people of southern Sudan. You can find out more on how to help John Dau in his efforts to help the people of Sudan at Direct Change's Sudan Project at http://www.directchange.org/sudan
