ugh, or, confessions of a gadget geek

I am such a gadget geek. My Sony Clié SJ30 recently died. I loved that thing…it allowed me to keep my contacts and schedule with me, along with nifty apps like budget trackers and food logs (for that perpetual diet I’m on).

I have been without a replacement for a few months now, and every day I have been realizing more and more how much I need to get another PDA. After a lot of research, I finally decided to get the brand-spanking new HP iPaq 6315 and replace both my Clié and my cell phone with a Pocket PC/phone/wi-fi/Bluetooth device. I ordered it directly from T-Mobile, the only provider to carry it right now, and anxiously awaited its arrival, refreshing the FedEx package tracking page enough so many times one might have called me obsessed.

Anyway, I finally got the thing, and it is very cool. As someone who has been a Palm OS loyalist for years and have always had an aversion to all things Microsoft (I’m a Mac girl at heart)…I have to admit I was taken by the aesthetics of the Pocket PC devices and displays, as well as the powerhouse stuff you can do with them like easily doing corporate work if your company’s on Microsoft products.

Unfortunately, once my phone was activated, I quickly realized I cannot get a T-Mobile signal in my house. Anywhere. At all.

So after working myself up over it, and even ordering some accessories online, I am going to have to pack it up and ship it back. Thank goodness I didn’t switch my phone number from Sprint yet as I would have been stuck with no way to communicate with the outside world from home. (I don’t have a landline.)

Now I’m in the market for a PDA again. I might wait until the new Treo 650 comes out, but honestly, now I am torn between the Palm OS and the Pocket PCs. I really want wi-fi and Bluetooth, but I’m also trying to figure out if I really need a cellphone in the same device as well.

All I know is that based on the research I’ve done, I will cross my fingers that Sprint comes out with something similar (I haven’t had any coverage problems with Sprint) and I will also take advantage of the 14-day return policy and happily ship something back if it doesn’t work.

Not to mention that Amex charged my credit card twice. Sending this back will show up as a return for one of the amounts. I have no doubts it’s going to be a major pain in the patootie to clear this one up.

Interesting news…Guy is moving in next door. The gorgeous house next to mine also has a basement apartment for rent, and I saw the sign the day it went up when I came home for lunch. I called about it and relayed the specs to Guy, who wanted to take a look. He liked it, so he’s moving in this month. Interesting, huh? I don’t really know what else to call it. I think it will be nice having him so nearby. But it has already been, ahem, interesting explaining to people (including his landlord and my mom) why we aren’t simply living together.

Anyway, I’m getting tired. I haven’t even started packing and I’m leaving for Virginia Beach tomorrow after work. My second half marathon this year is on Sunday. Can you say “unprepared”???
